Amy Adams May Star in Alien Invasion Drama for ‘Prisoners’ Director

By April 2, 2014

Amy Adams has never shied away from taking on extremely different roles, zinging from period dramas to modern romantic comedies and everything in between with grace, charm, and gravitas – so why not stick that in front of a pack of alien invaders?

Deadline reports that Adams is “in early talks” to star in Story of Your Life, a sci-fi feature about an alien invasion that already has one heck of a pedigree to set it apart from the genre, with the potential for Adams’ involvement just adding more credence to the possibility that this will be something special. The film is set to be directed by Denis Villeneuve, who recently directed Jake Gyllenhaal in both last year’s Prisoners and this season’s Enemy, with a script by Eric Heisserer (the 2011 version of The Thing) as adapted from a short story by Ted Chiang. Adams, who has long fostered relationships with her directors, from David O. Russell to Paul Thomas Anderson, would likely enjoy Villeneuve’s style of working, which is by all accounts very collaborative and fun for his actors.

The film will reportedly focus on “an expert linguist [who] is recruited by the military to determine whether they come in peace or are a threat. As she learns to communicate with the aliens, she begins experiencing vivid flashbacks that become the key to unlocking the greater mystery about the true purpose of their visit.” The story’s central character – Dr. Louise Banks, who Adams would presumably play – is a strong one, smart and compelling and quite layered. (She would also fit in quite nicely alongside Sandra Bullock’s Dr. Ryan Stone in Gravity.)

Chiang’s story was quite roundly lauded by the sci-fi community, and it picked up various awards upon its publication, including the 2000 Nebula Award for Best Novella and the 1999 Sturgeon Award (which aims to go to the best sci-fi story of the year). There’s no word on when Story Of Your Life will commence filming or when we can expect to hear a firm word on this casting rumor, but here’s hoping this all comes true – Adams and Villeneuve sound like a heck of a match.

So it’s going to be closer to the pace of “Contact” than “Independance Day”. I was hoping for the latter, but I’m sure people will enjoy it.
