The future of Marvel’s Spider-Man on film has been on an interesting trajectory ever since word came out about a licensing agreement between Sony and Marvel Studios, but now, it’s taken another new and unforeseen twist.
According to Variety, Sony Pictures Chairman Tom Rothman announced that an animated Spider-Man film will be coming in the summer of 2018 from the directors of The Lego Movie, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who will serve as treatment writers and producers on the new project. Additional producers will include regular Spider-Man franchise producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach, as well as Sony’s Amy Pascal. While there was some initial confusion about whether or not this new venture would somehow be tied to the live-action films, a later revision to the announcement stated that the animated feature will exist independently from the relaunched live-action series being undertaken by Sony and Marvel Studios.
Although there are still a lot of questions in the air about the live-action film in development with Marvel Studios, Rothman didn’t reveal any news about that project.
This is particularly interesting, since it seems like Lord and Miller are growing in demand. It was just announced that the sequel to their smash hit The Lego Movie has been slotted for release, which they’re expected to return to write. Warner Bros. also apparently has their eye on the duo to help develop a new film based on the Flash for the burgeoning DC Comics-based cinematic universe, started by 2013’s Man of Steel and continuing in next year’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad.
Still, the development of Spider-Man in animation will likely be a feather in the cap for Sony Pictures, who were initially exploring a plan for live-action spin-offs in the character’s world before the disappointing critical and commercial performance of last year’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
