When I was in college back in Idaho, there was a rite of passage for newly minted 21-year-olds and beyond known as the “Bovill Run”. Starting in Moscow (home of the University of Idaho) at a bar called The Plantation (“The Plant” for short) then hitting many bars during your 34-mile journey (which includes 8 bars all within 40 feet of each other on Main Street in the final town) until you reach your final destination in Bovill called Bailey’s where you would earn bragging rights and (if desired) purchase a baseball hat showing said bragging rights.
The World’s End takes that premise and turns it on its ear.
Written and directed by Edgar Wright, The World’s End is the third installment of what’s lovingly known as the Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy (Shaun Of The Dead and Hot Fuzz being the first two) and judging by the trailer, promises another scary yet hilarious good time.
The story goes a little something like this.
From left: Martin Freeman, Paddy Considine, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Eddie Marsan
After failing to make their hometown’s famous 12-pub crawl where the final stop is The World’s End, five friends (Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Martin Freeman, Paddy Considine and Eddie Marsan) get together 20 years later to try it again, bound and determined to ACTUALLY make The World’s End this time. Things start off fine and dandy, until they realize that something’s not quite right about their town; townfolk are possessed and resemble something between a zombie with a dash of Children Of The Damned/Invasion Of The Body Snatchers thrown in for good measure.
All of a sudden, completing the crawl is no longer a priority; surviving is.
As a longtime Simon Pegg/Nick Frost/Edgar Wright fan AND knowing they went to twelve ACTUAL locations and renaming the pubs for the film (instead of just using a soundstage and creating said places), I cannot WAIT to see how the final piece of the TF Cornetto trilogy will play out!
(p.s. Cornetto is an ice cream treat…U.S. version would be the Drumstick. The more you knooooooow)
Also know this:
The World’s End is slated to open in the U.K. July 19th and hits U.S. theatres August 23rd of this year.
Booze, bars, bros, babes and bad things that go bump in the night…I am IN.
