Disney is dominating the box office well before their most anticipated release of the year.
According to Variety, Walt Disney Studios has reached the global milestone of $3 billion due to the success of three of their releases in particular so far this year: March’s Cinderella, May’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, and June’s Inside Out. This marks the fastest that the studio has ever crossed that threshold. It’s the sixth consecutive year that Disney has reached $3 billion at the box office, and the ninth time overall. Last year, Disney hit the record on August 5th, compared to this year’s crossing of the threshold on June 30th.
Cinderella exceeded expectations upon its release, and grossed over $538 million worldwide. The success of that film is part of what’s prompted Disney to begin developing a series of other live-action adaptations based on a lot of their other animated films, including Dumbo with director Tim Burton, along with the likes of Mulan, Pinocchio, The Jungle Book, and several others. In May, Disney released Avengers: Age of Ultron, the highly anticipated sequel to 2012’s biggest blockbuster, and newest installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Age of Ultron has grossed $1.38 billion worldwide thus far, making it the #2 highest-grossing film of the year behind Universal’s Jurassic World.
The last major contributor to the high grosses for the year is Pixar’s Inside Out, which has grossed $363 million worldwide since its release on June 19th.
It will be very interesting to see what effect the grosses for Star Wars: The Force Awakens will have for the studio when that film is released on December 18th, as that’s likely one of (if not the) most anticipated film(s) of the year. Either way, Disney is on quite a roll so far in 2015, and they’re poised to be in even better shape by the time Star Wars returns to theaters this December.
