I doubt that Bruce Wayne has health insurance. Since he is self-employed, there is
no way that he would be able to obtain health insurance based on his medical history.
Fortunately, he is quite wealthy, so he can probably afford his emergency room bill.
In Batman’s final fight scene with the Joker in “The Dark Knight”, he is attacked by two
dogs. Since he has exposed skin, we must assume that he suffered at least one bite.
These dogs look pretty rabid to me, and since we’ll never find them, he would definitely
need a four-week course of rabies treatment. Ironic, that Batman needs treatment for rabies.
During the course of his fight, he suffers trauma to his neck, shoulder, torso and arms.
While it is hard to tell, he most likely suffered a head injury as well. These injuries
will get him a CT of his brain and cervical spine. The metal bar on his chest will get
him plain x-rays of his chest and his fall will necessitate lumbar spine films. Based
on the fact that he appears to be favoring his right arm and shoulder after trauma to
the area would probably get him an MRI of his shoulder. Finally, blunt trauma to his
costovertebral angle will buy him a renal ultrasound and urinalysis.
He will certainly get a number of routine laboratory tests including a blood count and
liver function tests.
So, what is this going to cost? The visit alone will cost at least $500, although many
emergency rooms might charge 4-5 times this much, just because they can. The
laboratory tests will run close to $500. The big-ticket costs, however, will be the
MRI, CT, ultrasound and x-rays. These will probably run close to $5000. Finally, the
emergency room doctor and the radiologist are going to charge him for their time. This
should come in around another $1,000.
I assume that Bruce Wayne is pretty tough. He probably will refuse any medication
while in the emergency room. Since it is unlikely that he suffered any broken bones, he
will not need any additional treatment.
Bruce Wayne will get a bill for anywhere from $7,000 to $10,000. Fortunately, this is
pocket change to him. On the other hand, the Gotham City Emergency Room should
have a healthy profit whenever Batman is engaged in fighting the criminal element in
