Bob Odenkirk, Oliver Platt, Kate Walsh & Glenn Howerton Join ‘Fargo’

By October 11, 2013

FX’s limited series adaptation of Joel & Ethan Coen’s crime thriller “Fargo” already has Martin Freeman, Billy Bob Thornton and Colin Hanks on board, but the cast has just been rounded out to truly make this a must-watch engagement.

A press release from FX has just revealed that “Breaking Bad” star Bob Odenkirk (getting his own spin-off “Better Call Saul”), Oliver Platt (X-Men: First Class), Kate Walsh (“Grey’s Anatomy” and “Private Practice”) and Glenn Howerton (“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”) have all joined the cast of the limited series coming in the spring of 2014.

The true crime story is based on the original feature film, but the series won’t follow the same footsteps from the screenplay. Instead, the series follows mostly new characters and a new case, but set within the unique Minnesota town. Thornton plays a rootless, manipulative man named Lorne Malvo who gets involved with small town insurance salesman Lester Nygaard (Martin Freeman) for a shady deal. Meanwhile, Colin Hanks will play Duluth Police Deputy Gus Grimly, a single dad who must choose between his own personal safety when he comes face-to-face with a killer.

Bob Odenkirk - Breaking Bad

As for the new cast members, the press release says, Odenkirk will play Deputy Bill Olson, a Bemidji deputy with seniority over his younger, smarter and more ambitious fellow deputy. Platt has the role of Stavros Milos, the Supermarket King of Minnesota, while Walsh is playing Gina Hess, a former stripper and mother of teenage twin boys. Finally, Howerton, who moved from FX to FXX with his comedy series, has the role of Don Chumph, an ambitious personal trainer. Sounds like a perfect fit.

Other noted cast members include Allison Tolman as Molly Solverson, the more ambitious deputy who works under Odenkirk’s character, and Russell Harvard (There Will Be Blood) and Adam Goldberg (The Unusuals) will play members of the Fargo Crime Syndicate known as “Mr. Wrench” and “Mr. Numbers,” the muscle and the mouth, respectively. Joey King (The Conjuring), Peter Breitmayer (A Serious Man), Tom Musgrave, and Josh Close round out the rest of the cast.

The script for the 10-episode project coming in 2014 hails from writer Noah Hawley (“My Generation”) who will also executive produce, and Adam Bernstein (“30 Rock”) will direct the pilot episode. With this unbelievable cast assembled, you can be sure this will be a hit for FX. No specific release date is set, but “Fargo” will arrive on FX next spring.
