The future of the DC Extended Universe continues to be reshaped in the wake of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice‘s lukewarm critical reception, with The Flash recently losing director Seth Grahame-Smith and Ben Affleck being given some additional creative control as executive producer of Justice League. With a lighter tone expected for next summer’s Wonder Woman film and comedic sensibilities already observed in the marketing for Suicide Squad, it seems like Warner Bros. is trying to move away from the dreary tone of Batman v Superman, and Booster Gold might be the sort of superhero that can help them out.
Birth Movies Death reports that Zack Stentz – who penned the recent Kevin Smith-directed episode of The Flash, along with contributing to Thor and X-Men: First Class – is hard at work on a treatment for a Booster Gold screenplay, with The Flash and Arrow head honcho Greg Berlanti producing and possibly directing. Both shows have been warmly received by critics and fans – most of which can be attributed to the fact that the characters feel just like their comic book counterparts – and Berlanti seems like a solid choice to find the right balance between humor and heart that have made Booster Gold so endearing to readers.
A disgraced former athlete from the future, Booster Gold uses his job as a night watchman to steal a collection of powerful artifacts, then hijacks a time machine to travel back to the 20th century and establish himself as a superhero. Obsessed with fame, he has a fascinating character arc that takes him from arrogant and self-centered glory hound to genuinely well-respected hero, and there’s a tremendous amount of entertainment that could be mined from this concept.
Warner Bros. has yet to confirm that a Booster Gold film is officially in development – and with a whole slate of DC-related projects on the horizon, it might be awhile before they do – but we’re crossing our fingers that Berlanti and Stentz can get this one off the ground, because it sounds fantastic.
