If you’ve seen or are familiar with AMC’s Breaking Bad, then you know EXACTLY what this is supposed to be…
…except it’s not.
In reality, this is blue tinted rock sugar candy called “Meth Candy” (or “Breaking Bad Candy”) and it’s getting been tons of attention the last couple days.
The Candy Lady in Albuquerque, New Mexico was the original supplier of the candy that was used as the meth that Walter White makes in the show (which is also set in Albuquerque). Hall had made the candy as a prop in previous seasons but it wasn’t until lead actor Bryan Cranston pulled out a bag on David Letterman’s show last month that Hall decided to sell it (packaged in small “dime bags”) as an homage to the show.
In an interview with the Associated Press, Hall stresses “It’s just rock candy with blue dye and it looks like the real thing.”
Of COURSE fans of Breaking Bad and the city the show calls home can’t get enough of the “blue stuff”, but a lot of eyebrows (including mine) were raised at the sight and name of said candy because let’s face it, kids are impressionable AND imitate EVERY cool thing they see.
BUT on the other side of the coin, gotta agree with Hall when she says “Everyone needs to remember this is television. We’re just playing on a television show. I don’t condone drugs in any way, shape or form,” and stresses that “product is not recommended for children” when purchasing online.
If you can’t take that left turn at Albuquerque, don’t panic; you can get your fix online in the “House Specialties” and “Southwestern and New Mexican Flavors” sections; just scroll down for “Breaking Bad Candy” (found on the right) and are packaged as either 5 for $5 or 10 for $10.
While there, look around the site at the other AMAZING smackerels (INCLUDING chocolate-free doggy treats) The Candy Lady has available for purchase.
Have fun with the Meth Candy but for the love of all that is holy, DON’T smoke it…or I will NEVER stop laughing at you.
Breaking Bad airs on AMC, Sunday nights at 10/9 central.
