BREAKING: ‘Star Wars: Episode VIII’ Release Date Changed

By January 20, 2016

Following the enormous, record-breaking success of Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens late last December, Disney and Lucasfilm are already heading full steam into their next Star Wars projects, with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story set for release later this year, and Rian Johnson’s Force Awakens follow-up project, the currently untitled Episode VIII, set for release in 2017.

However, much like how J.J. Abrams’ seventh installment in the popular franchise was pushed back to meet the filmmakers’ creative requirements, it looks like the studios are planning on giving Johnson as much time as possible to perfect the highly-anticipated sequel.

Coming hot off of the presses, Disney and Lucasfilm have announced that they have pushed back the Episode VIII release date from the previously slated May 26th release, to December 15th, 2017, almost a full seven months later. This also comes following several rumors and reports that Johnson was performing rewrites on the script as well, working to focus more on the characters introduced in The Force Awakens, and less on the previously rumored new female roles. Considering how well the December release date has worked for the studios up to this point as well, the push to the Holiday season makes sense.

Worry not though as the rewrites are said to be based purely on the positive reception that the characters from Force Awakens have received, and Johnson and his team are working to make the story even more of a continuation of their emotional journeys than before.

Now, this will likely come as disappointing news for fans, since the main consensus leaving The Force Awakens, whether you loved it or were disappointed by it, was how excited everyone was for the film’s sequel, after all of the careful set-up that had been put in place in the film. However, since The Force Awakens clearly benefitted from the added time, as long as I end up getting the best possible version of Episode VIII that I can, then I’m okay with this. As far as I’m concerned, all this does is give more time for Rian Johnson to give us the best Star Wars movie he can.

Star Wars: Episode VIII is set to hit theatres on December 15th, 2017.

  • I always thought that May 2017 was a bit soon if it hadn’t even started shooting yet. Plus December is a great time to release it! It’s going to be like double Christmas for the next 2 years!
