BREAKING: ‘Venom’ Spin-Off Back on Track With New Writer

By March 4, 2016

Before Sony made the deal with Marvel Studios to introduce Peter Parker and Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they had a lot of crazy plans for building their own Spider-Man Cinematic Universe. These included, but were not limited to an all-female Spider-Man film and yeah, an Aunt May spin-off movie. That one still makes me roll my eyes.

In the partnership with Marvel though, it was clear that Sony would still have plenty of control over the character and the supporting players that occupied his own small world, which meant they could still produce their own unrelated Spider-Man movies and it looks like one of their long-running spin-off ideas has tinally resurfaced as well.

THR is reporting that Sony has started work once again on their Venom spin-off film by signing screenwriter Dante Harper to pen a script for the film, which will focus entirely on the popular Spider-Man character, who has transitioned between being a villain and anti-hero multiple times throughout his comic book career. The character and film will reportedly be completely separate from Tom Holland’s Spider-Man though, and the standalone Spider-Man film in 2017.

Matt Tolmach and Avi Arad will produce and oversee the film. If you are a long time Spider-Man fan like myself too, I wouldn’t blame you if you just shivered a little bit reading those two names.

There’s no word on which version of the iconic character the film will focus on, but out of all of Sony’s old Spider-Man spin-off plans, I’m a bit disappointed that this is the one they’ve chosen to revive. Especially considering the promise that Drew Goddard’s Sinister Six spin-off had, and the clear passion the now Academy Award-nominated writer and director was putting into it as well. It’s not that I have anything against the Venom character, as much as I just think it’s a bit of a missed opportunity on Sony’s part. Although, it wouldn’t be the first time that I’ve said that either.

The Venom spin-off is currently in development.
