A couple weeks ago, Cosmic Book News (a site I’d never even HEARD of) told the world that “Breaking Bad” star Bryan Cranston had signed a six-appearance deal to play Lex Luthor in upcoming DC movies including Zack Snyder’s Batman-Superman AND that Matt Damon would be Aquaman. It’s odd that THEY’D be the ones to break a story like this first over a TRUSTED outlet like The Hollywood Reporter or Variety (which is why we didn’t cover it all – we knew it was bogus) but let’s deal with one b.s. rumor at a time, shall we?
In a recent interview with Boston.com, Cranston FINALLY set the record (somewhat) straight saying, “I’ve heard that too. Six? This is all news to me. I think that maybe my name is bandied about because I’m known to be bald. ‘What bald guy can we get?’ The reality is they can take any actor and shave his head or put a bald cap on him.”
And while I would be PERFECTLY fine with Cranston taking on the role of Superman’s human nemesis, I have a small list of dudes I’d love to see considered as the ol’ Double L.
I’m not going with Dean Norris because he’s bald; I’m going with Norris because five seasons of being Hank Schrader on “Breaking Bad” have shown he’s got the range to play comedy or intensely serious at the drop of a hat. His interpretation of Lex would be pretty dang amazing…and scary. I gots chills.
Okay, dang it. I know he’s not the right age range but thanks to “Smallville,” Michael Rosenbaum has given us the MOST emotionally fleshed out Lex Luthor we’ve seen and to me is the BEST interpretation of Luthor I’ve come across (with Gene Hackman coming in a VERY, VERY close second). Given the chance, I know Rosenbaum would KILL IT.
Now hear me out…we know Willis can do intense but we’ve never seen him TRULY play a bad guy (The Jackal DOESN’T COUNT) and he can be a scary bastard when he wants to be; could be interesting to see how he’d take on the role.
Strong’s VAST experience with playing the bad guy (Kick-Ass) or guys who start good and eventually become the bad guy (Green Lantern’s Sinestro) would make him a GREAT Luthor, giving him the depth and emotion we’ve been missing since Rosenbaum’s interpretation in “Smallville.”
Like I’ve said before, Cranston’s said he’s not Luthor but he’s not said whether or not he’ll ever BE Luthor…so the door’s still open on that possibility.
So, who did I miss? If not Bryan Cranston, who do YOU want to see play Luthor?
