Despite headlining one of the most critically acclaimed television shows of all time, former Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston has yet to find that one magic film role that elevates him to the next level – but it certainly isn’t for lack of trying. This year alone, he’s already appeared as President Lyndon B. Johnson in the HBO original film All the Way, and in just a few weeks he’ll be back on the big screen in the undercover drug caper The Infiltrator.
But if that’s not enough Cranston in your diet, you can also catch him this holiday season in Why Him?, where he plays a stiff suburban father who discovers that his daughter (Zoey Deutch) is dating a foul-mouthed, tattoo-covered internet billionaire (James Franco) intent on becoming a permanent part of the family.
Check out the red-band trailer for Why Him? right here, but fair warning – the language is very NSFW:
I’ve always felt that Cranston’s comedic sensibilities are underrated, but Why Him? doesn’t really strike me as the right project to make audiences stand up and take notice. Rather, it feels like a more profane and obnoxious version of a story that has already been done to death, and even the talented supporting cast of Megan Mullally, Keegan-Michael Key, Andrew Rannells, and Adam DeVine does little to pique my interest in this one.
Here’s the official synopsis, just in case the premise wasn’t clear in the trailer:
Over the holidays, Ned (Bryan Cranston), an overprotective but loving dad and his family visit his daughter at Stanford, where he meets his biggest nightmare: her well-meaning but socially awkward Silicon Valley billionaire boyfriend, Laird (James Franco). The straight-laced Ned thinks Laird, who has absolutely no filter, is a wildly inappropriate match for his daughter. The one-sided rivalry-and Ned’s panic level-escalate when he finds himself increasingly out of step in the glamorous high-tech hub, and learns that Laird is about to pop the question.
And here’s a more polite, more socially acceptable green-band version of the trailer, with a handful of new footage to make up for the lack of F-bombs and sex jokes:
Why Him? arrives on December 25, where I’m sure it will be embraced by dysfunctional families everywhere.
