Chris Hemsworth to Host ‘Saturday Night Live’ for the First Time in March

By February 24, 2015

With Avengers: Age of Ultron just over two months away, we’re going to start getting an onslaught of marketing for the Marvel sequel, including special appearances by the cast promoting the film. And here’s one to get excited about.

Chris Hemsworth, the Australian actor who plays the mighty Thor in the Marvel cinematic universe will be hosting “Saturday Night Live” on March 7th, along with musical guest the Zac Brown Band. Both will be making their “SNL” debut in Studio 8H.

More than likely this means that we’ll get to see some kind of Thor sketch with Hemsworth as host, but surely the writers will have plenty of ideas to pitch to the actor for his first-time on the show. However, we know that there’s Avengers costumes lying around since Jeremy Renner poked fun at Hawkeye when he hosted in 2012:

Part of me wonders if Hemsworth hosting “SNL” was booked back when In the Heart of the Sea was still slated to come out in March. The Ron Howard drama about the story that inspired the classic Moby Dick has since been pushed back to December 11th, a week before Star Wars: The Force Awakens arrives. but it also works that The Avengers: Age of Ultron opens in May, so it still works out.

In addition, we’ll also get to see Hemsworth doing some comedy with a supporting role in Vacation, the reboot of the former National Lampoon title that now has Ed Helms in the lead as a grown up Rusty Griswold, taking his own family on a vacation. The actor has show solid comedic chops in the brief moments of humor in the Thor franchise as well as The Avengers, so I’m anxious to see how he does in a straight-up comedic environment.

Funnily enough, Hemsworth was one of the 15 people we named as hopeful first-time hosts in 2015, so we’re going to assume that Lorne Michaels will follow through on several more before the year is out. Will we see any other Avengers heading to “SNL” this season? We’ll have to wait and see.
