Christina Hendricks Joins the Cast of ‘Bad Santa 2’

By January 6, 2016

Following the success of the highly-beloved 2003 raunchy Santa comedy, Bad Santa, Broad Green Pictures and Miramax are teaming up to bring us a new sequel to the comedy film, which not only sees the return of Thornton’s foul-mouthed, trashy Santa character, but also his mother played by Kathy Bates, who is very much in the same vein as her son. Tony Cox and Brett Kelly are also set to return from the original film.

It looks like the sequel has just snagged a highly-prestigious addition to its cast as well, with one of the most consistently great actresses in the industry today.

Deadline is reporting that Christina Hendricks has been cast in the film as the main love interest of Thornton’s Willie. While a majority of plot details for the film are still be kept under wraps, Hendricks’ character will be an Ivy-league educated, upper class woman that runs a charity being targeted by Willie and his Mom. Much like Lauren Graham’s character in the original film as well, she’s got a bit of a thing for sketchy characters dressed in Santa costumes.

I don’t think I’ll be the only one that went into the original film with some fairly low expectations too, and was pleasantly surprised by how good of a comedy it ended up being. Unfortunately, even more than any other genre in Hollywood, comedy sequels seem to fail more than they succeed, so I hope that Bad Santa 2 will be able to recapture the same magic and tone of the first film, without going overboard or feeling purely like a cash grab.

Whether or not it lives up to its potential though, the addition of Hendricks could mean very good things, coming off of her long run on AMC’s Mad Men, as well as a number of small, solid films throughout the past few years, Bad Santa 2 could mark an interesting new direction in her career. Now let’s just hope she’s as entertaining and fun as Graham’s character from the original was as well.

Bad Santa 2 is set to hit theatres on November 23rd, 2016.
