From everything that we’ve seen and heard about it so far, it sounds more and more like Spider-Man: Homecoming is going to be the Spider-Man standalone film that fans have been desperately waiting for. A callback to the more classic iterations and supporting characters for Peter Parker, the movie has been compared to that of a John Hughes coming-of-age film, and it’s hard to imagine a better pitch than that.
While promoting the upcoming blu ray release of Captain America: Civil War as well, The Russo Brothers have been making headlines in the geek world fairly consistently over the past few days, and they have some fairly comforting things to say about Homecoming as well, it looks like.
During a recent interview with Comicbook.com, Anthony Russo talked about what it’s been like working with director Jon Watts on the film so far:
“From a process standpoint, it’s like it is with all other Marvel directors, everybody runs into each other in the hallways, we’re passing off story information between each other. I don’t necessarily know how much it influenced me yet because we’re not involved in it on a day-to-day project, a process, and we’ve seen as much as everybody else has seen, meaning if you were at Comic-Con and you saw the Comic-Con trailer, that’s what we’ve seen of it.”
“I think the tone and the direction that he’s [Jon Watts] heading in that movie are fantastic, I think it has the potential to be the best Spider-Man yet and I know that’s saying a lot because perhaps my favorite comic book movie of all time is Raimi’s Spider-Man 2. He’s [Jon Watts] crazy talented, the script is amazing, and we have really high expectations for the movie.”
Honestly, after the critical acclaim and fan love that Tom Holland received for his turn as the character in Civil War, this doesn’t sound like that crazy of a possibility. Even the head of Sony seems incredibly confident in the film’s success, giving a large amount of the credit to the creative team over at Marvel, and if one thing’s for sure, it seems like this will at the very least be the most faithful and loving Spider-Man film yet. Following Raimi’s first two films as well, that’s saying something.
Spider-Man: Homecoming is set to hit theatres on July 7th, 2017.
