CONFIRMED: Meet Kung Jin, the First Gay Character to Appear In ‘Mortal Kombat’

By April 16, 2015

Mortal Kombat X was released on April 14th to much fanfare (and rightfully so), but some of the big news surrounding it is that, for the first time in the MK franchise, there is a gay man fighting for Earthrealm — and his name is Kung Jin.

Gay Star News was the first outlet to catch the word on this new character during an in-game cutscene conversation between himself and Raiden, with Raiden telling Jin that ““Self-loathing has always been an unfortunate part of your make-up,” and later — when Raiden tries to get Kung Jin to follow in his cousin Kung Lao’s footsteps and become a warrior monk — Jin tells Raiden that he can’t because “‘they’ won’t accept him.” Raiden kindly answers, “They care about only what is in your heart; not whom your heart desires.”

NetherRealm’s cinematic director confirmed Jin’s sexuality on Twitter by saying  “I see people are picking up on the subtle exposition contained in Kung Jin’s flashback. Glad we have observant fans!”

And like the nature of a gamer, they’ve let their views be known:

If you don’t own MKX and would like to see said cutscene, the gang at Kotaku have done all the heavy lifting so that you can the scene unfold for yourself. If you own the game and have already played through the campaign — like I know some of you darlings have by now — let us know YOUR thoughts on Kung Jin!

Be sure to check out our full review for Mortal Kombat X early next week!

that’s pretty weird since it doesn’t really matter much if he is gay or not! nevertheless this is positive for the lgbt community
