‘Deadpool’s’ Marketing Campaign Takes a Shot at ‘Wolverine’

I don’t recall, ever, a marketing campaign as funny or clever as this one is for the movie Deadpool. From development, to viral ‘leaked’ concept video, to a greenlight, to the very first on set stills – the marketeers over at Fox seem to always be one step ahead of our expectations ( with the romantic – rom-com posters touting a Valentine’s themed movie being a stroke of sheer genius).

Then the TV spots began airing and we got amazing new looks from the actual movie. This made the fans even more happy. Then… this:

deadpool-billboard-hed-2016This one set me off the most – man, those crazy marketing genius over at Fox really were given carte blanche. Noticing the main trend here – Deadpool IS self-referential, so the marketing is of the same. It knows it’s putting a skull-poo-L emoji out into the world as if Deadpool himself fired off a text to Fox. It knows it’s opening near Valentine’s Day so why not make fun of all those Nicholas Sparks’ books to movie adaptations? Screw it. It’s Deadpool.

That’s the fun they are having and I happen to love the ever-loving hell out of it all! Take for instance their latest promo touting Australia Day (it’s a thing). And seeing as a certain, famous actor that hails from the land down under plays one of the most popular mutants onscreen, it’s the perfect chance to take a (cheap) shot at him because – X-Men Origins Wolverine. Seriously, this is one of the funniest videos of the day – let alone of the whole Deadpool campaign.

Again, here’s what I think the marketing team is thinking… Screw it. It’s Deadpool.

Now, laugh:

I give three gold stars to the marketing team over at Fox (three stars were the highest you could get in my kindergarten years). They’re having fun and because of it, the fans are having fun. We know exactly what were getting with this movie. It’s transparency is refreshing… Then again, that’s the whole point. Look right at the camera and say ‘That movie (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) was a career low for me.’ Is that Deadpool talking or Ryan Reynolds?

Honestly, it doesn’t matter. That’s why I can’t wait to see what Deadpool has in store for us when it drops on Friday, February 12th. How about all of you out there? Is the marketing campaign hitting all the right spots for you?
