‘Doctor Who’ Christmas Special Poster and Title Revealed

By December 1, 2015

The past few days have been an exciting time for Doctor Who fans following Peter Jackson’s video yesterday that seemingly confirmed he would be coming onboard to direct an episode of the series in the nearby future, as well as this weekend’s upcoming season 9 finale. However, 2015’s Who goodness doesn’t end there luckily, as the annual Christmas special episode is set to follow-up the finale just a few weeks later, and will feature the return of one of the series’ most beloved characters in Alex Kingston’s River Song.

Like most things with this show, information and plot details regarding the special have been hard to come by up until this point, and while fans have shared their excitement to see River’s return finally, we don’t quite know whether to prepare our popcorn, or our tissues yet.

However, the official plot synopsis, title, and first image (see above) for the Christmas special, titled “The Husbands of River Song,” have been revealed and finally share some insight into the special’s story. Check out the synopsis below:

“It’s Christmas Day on a remote human colony and the Doctor is hiding from Christmas Carols and Comedy Antlers. But when a crashed spaceship calls upon the Doctor for help, he finds himself recruited into River Song’s squad and hurled into a fast and frantic chase across the galaxy. King Hydroflax (Greg Davies) is furious, and his giant Robot bodyguard is out-of-control and coming for them all. Will Nardole (Matt Lucas) survive? And when will River Song work out who the Doctor is?”

The synopsis is predictably vague in order to limit as many spoilers as possible, but it looks like River might not quite know who Capaldi’s version of the Doctor is right away, which should provide an interesting new dynamic to the character, since most of the times that we’ve ran into her in the series, she’s been the one withholding all the information.

The series will be picking up with River after her farewell to Amy and Rory in 2012, but before her death in 2013’s “The Name of the Doctor”, and it doesn’t seem clear how many interactions with Capaldi’s Doctor River will have before then, and for all we know, this could be the only one. Following a fairly heavy season up until this point too, the Christmas Special will hopefully prpvide a lighter tone than its predecessors, and considering the losses that Capaldi’s Doctor has faced this season, maybe a crazy, galactic adventure with River Song is just what he needs?

This year’s Doctor Who Christmas special will air on BBC America on Christmas Day.
