Donald Glover Cast in ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’

By June 14, 2016

In addition to casting a comfortingly diverse cast, the ensemble assembled for Spider-Man: Homecoming so far has been fairly terrific, with notable additions including Michael Keaton as the villain, Robert Downey Jr. reprising his role as Tony Stark/Iron Man, Marisa Tomei as Aunt May, Tony Revolori, Zendaya, and of course, Tom Holland as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, following his introduction in Captain America: Civil War.

It looks like one of the most demanded casting decisions in a Spider-Man movie may have just actually happened as well, though we still don’t know all of the details yet.

THR is reporting that Community star and Childish Gambino rapper, Donald Glover, has been cast in Homecoming in a currently undisclosed role. The film, which is said to be a callback to the coming-of-age films from directors like John Hughes and more, is set to be directed by Jon Watts, under a partnership between Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures.

While the details surrounding Glover’s role in the film are being kept under wraps for the time being, this is pretty big news nonetheless, and comes as a bit of a long-awaited victory for Glover, after he and fans had petitioned for him to be cast as Miles Morales all the way back in 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man. The role of course ended up going to Andrew Garfield, while Glover went on to provide the voice for Morales in Ultimate Spider-Man.

It’s likely that Glover is too old to play Morales at this point, and it seems even more unlikely that Miles will be included in the movie at all, especially since it’s supposedly set to follow Peter as he comes to terms with who he is and where his home is. Nonetheless, the inclusion of Glover in the film, whether he’s playing a superpowered character or not, is a nice nod to the fans who have been asking for this casting for years now, and only continues to cement Homecoming as one of the more ethnically diverse casts of a superhero film yet.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is set to hit theatres on July 7th, 2017.
