There are very few filmmakers with a reputation and notoriety that matches Christopher Nolan’s. Arguably the most influential filmmaker of this generation, he’s one of the few men working today who can sell original projects at large budgets to studios nowadays, and the kinds of films he’s been able to make because of his popularity, is fairly astonishing considering the current climate and economy of the industry right now.
Next year though, Nolan seems like he may be outdoing himself with the new WWII epic film, Dunkirk, which will tell the true story of Operation Dynamo, an evacuation orchestrated by the British which saved the lives of over 330,000 allied troops trapped in the French seaport of Dunkirk in May and June of 1940, as Nazi troops surrounded and closed in on them.
Following an early leak today as well, Warner Bros. Pictures has released the very first, official trailer for Dunkirk online, and yeah, it looks phenomenal. What else did you expect?
Nolan has established and proven his unique and acute sense of cinema in his previous films, and his approach to scale, character, and action seems like it was practically made for a war movie, which is probably why it seemed like such an obvious choice for him when it was first announced. At this point, it’s shaping up to be one of the most anticipated films of next year, though the same can be said whenever a new film from Nolan is released, I suppose.
The film is set to star Mark Rylance, Tom Hardy, Kenneth Branagh, Cillian Murphy, Fionn Whitehead, Jack Lowden, Aneurin Barnard, and even One Direction member, Harry Styles, who will be making his acting debut here as well. Judging by the cast and the brief images shown here, it looks like Dunkirk could end up being just as effective of a war film as we’ve been hoping. Coming off of the divisive Interstellar in 2014 as well, Nolan seems like he’s following his most ambitious project with one that could go down, at the very least, at being his most visually and technically impressive to date. Here’s to hoping.
Dunkirk is set to hit theatres on July 19th, 2017.
