Dwayne Johnson to Star in Dramatic Survival Film ‘Not Without Hope’

Dwayne Johnson 5

Dwayne Johnson has paid his dues. Coming from the world of professional wrestling and making his big screen debut with The Mummy Returns, he worked his way up from crappy action movies (The Scorpion King) to good action movies (Fast Five), and he’s actually found the occasionally complex role to take on in between (Pain & Gain, Snitch). Now it looks like the actor is hoping to get into a straight-ahead drama, and maybe – just maybe – this could be a turning point for his career.

Variety tells us that Johnson will star in Not Without Hope, a survival film from Relativity based on a true story of Nick Schuyler and his three friends — NFL players Marquis Cooper and Corey Smith, and Schuyler’s best friend, Will Bleakley, a former University of South Florida football player — whose boat capsized during a fishing trip in the Gulf of Mexico and left the four men stranded at sea. Johnson will play Schuyler, but no other actors have been mentioned yet, and no director is attached.

Movies about survival are all the rage right now, and with the Oscar race heating up with names like Tom Hanks (Captain Phillips), Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years A Slave), Robert Redford (All is Lost), and Sandra Bullock (Gravity) garnering awards talk, it’s not too far outside the realm of possibility that the former wrestler could get Hollywood’s attention in a similar way when this film debuts. It’d be one more mountain for The Rock to scale, but he’s practically made a career out of surprising people, so I wouldn’t bet against him when he throws himself into a project. This might be the role that gets him more than just action movies from now on.
