Emma Stone Bails on ‘Crimson Peak’, Mia Wasikowska to Replace Her

After his “giant monsters versus giant robots” film Pacific Rim hits theaters this summer, director Guillermo del Toro has no intention of letting another five years go by without getting behind the camera again. In fact, he’s already lined up his next outing, a gothic haunted house movie called Crimson Peak that stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Jessica Chastain as brother and sister from an aristocratic family and Pac Rim star Charlie Hunnam in a lead role.

He also had The Amazing Spider-Man star Emma Stone attached, but The Wrap says that Stone has regrettably bailed on the project due to scheduling conflicts. She’s very much an in-demand actress right now, and it would have been awesome to see her star alongside that killer cast for a terrific director like del Toro. But The Wrap reports that talks have begun with Alice in Wonderland star Mia Wasikowska to take over for Stone in the role of “a young author named Edith Cushing who discovers that her charming new husband is not who he appears to be.”

Will Hunnam be playing her husband? We’re not entirely sure, and most of the details of the plot are still being kept secret at this point. But what we do know is that del Toro plans to subvert our expectations by toying with the conventions of the haunted house genre, which sounds fantastic. I love del Toro’s enthusiasm as a filmmaker, and a passion project like this sounds like it could turn out to be one of his best movies if everything goes according to plan. I’m not the biggest Wasikowska fan (I’d much rather have seen Stone stick with this), but hopefully she has a smaller part and the rest of the amazing cast can carry the brunt of the film on their capable shoulders.

Real talk: this movie had me at “Benedict Cumberbatch and Jessica Chastain.” Anything else is just icing on the cake.
