‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ Casts Ron Perlman in New Role

By October 8, 2015

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them – the first film in a planned Harry Potter spin-off trilogy – has been gathering a fair amount of buzz for itself over the past few months. While the initial announcement received a mixed response from fans at first, it seems like the more details and cast members that are revealed for the film – the more the excitement from Harry Potter fans grows.

There’s something that separates it from all of the other spin-offs, prequels, and sequels that are being made in the Hollywood industry today though, in my opinion. Unlike some of those movies (not naming any names here), Fantastic Beasts seems like it will be wildly different from the first 8 Harry Potter films. Set in New York City in the 1920s, the film will follow magizoologist Newt Scamander as he searches and documents all kinds of fascinating and never-before-seen magical creatures. The setting, time period, and characters all seem different enough from the original franchise, that I think Fantastic Beasts will be able to tell its own story without being bogged down by its connections to the HP films.

Plus, it doesn’t hurt either that J.K. Rowling herself wrote the film’s screenplay and it is set to be directed by David Yates, who has more than proven he can tell a great story from this world onscreen.

THR is reporting that Hellboy and Sons of Anarchy star, Ron Perlman, has officially joined the cast of the film. While plot details are still being kept under wraps for the most part, the report states that Perlman is likely playing a goblin in the movie. Filming for the spin-off is already underway with a cast that includes Eddie Redmayne as Newt, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Ezra Miller, Colin Farrell, Jon Voight, Gemma Chan, Samantha Morton, Carmen Ejogo, and more.

As a die-hard Harry Potter fan – I love this news. Perlman has established himself as a fan-favorite actor over the past few years, with his performances in movies like the previously mentioned Hellboy movies, Pacific Rim, Drive, Blade IISons of Anarchy, and more. His trademark gravelly voice and overall bad ass demeanor have helped him to stand out from the pack in some of the more crowded films mentioned above, and he’s still my favorite human part in Pacific Rim, personally. So can I see Perlman as a goblin in a Harry Potter movie? Yeah, it’s almost too perfect of casting in my opinion.

Fantastic Beasts continues to create an incredibly interesting cast for itself here. Unlike the Harry Potter movies, where most of the lead roles were cast by then unknown actors, a majority of the Fantastic Beasts cast is filled with some incredibly remarkable, and well-established actors. However, none of them are too recognizable in my opinion, with every actor and actress in the film already proving that they are able to disappear into numerous different roles.

This is shaping up to be one hell of an interesting companion to the Harry Potter franchise, as I imagine the tones and aesthetics will likely be similar, but the story and cast seem different in the most perfect ways. I can’t wait.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is set to hit theatres on November 18th, 2016.
