Today marks the day that we are officially one year away from the theatrical release of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which will earnestly kick off Warner Bros.’ new, DC Comics-based cinematic universe. In addition to the “World’s Finest” heroes appearing in the form of Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel and Ben Affleck’s Dark Knight, we can also expect to see Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, as well as Jason Momoa as Aquaman. We’ll also get to see the first new live-action iteration of Superman’s nemesis, Lex Luthor, that we’ve seen in nearly a decade at that point, as played by actor Jesse Eisenberg.
For awhile now, fans have been speculating whether or not Eisenberg’s Luthor will maintain one of his most defining physical traits from the comics: his baldness. Early set photos saw Eisenberg with a hood or towel wrapped around his head to prevent fans and onlookers from catching a look, but now, the question has been definitively answered. In a new exclusive image, Entertainment Weekly has revealed what Eisenberg’s Luthor will look like when he stands across from both Superman and Batman for the first time in live-action. See the image below.
The loss of the actor’s curly locks does a surprising amount to make him look formidable, and his neutral expression seems cold, and very evocative of Luthor as he is in the source material. Of course, we still have yet to see any footage of Eisenberg as Luthor in his actual performance, but with fans seemingly so worried about his mere appearance, this image should serve to put a lot of minds at ease. While Luthor’s appearances on film have rarely done him justice, in the comics he stands as one of the most extraordinary supervillains in existence when compared with both his DC Comics brethren as well as Marvel’s offerings. Luthor, through sheer ingenuity and brilliance, has managed to become the single greatest enemy to the most powerful being in existence. That certainly says something.
Beyond that, the comics are full of great stories featuring the keen intellect of Luthor squaring off against Batman, who usually has to rely far more on his brain against an adversary like that than his fisticuffs. While it’s not exactly clear yet if Luthor will be the main villain of the film, the possibilities are certainly exciting, as long as screenwriter Chris Terrio and director Zack Snyder stick with the comic book iteration of the character. Frankly, the real estate mogul of the 1970’s just doesn’t cut it when compared to modern comics Luthor.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will release in theaters on March 25th, 2016. For more on the film as it develops, keep an eye on GeekNation!
