FX Renews ‘The Americans’ For Two Final Seasons

By May 25, 2016

While HBO and Netflix are often the first names that come to mind when discussing the best destinations for original programming, FX is continuing to carve out a nice chunk of territory with critically acclaimed shows like Fargo, American Crime Story: The People vs O.J. Simpson, and my personal pick for the best show currently on television, The Americans.

The riveting Cold War-era spy drama about a pair of KGB sleeper agents posing as an all-American family has been showered with awards and accolades since its debut, but the end is drawing near: earlier today, FX announced that The Americans had been renewed for two more seasons, with 13 episodes coming in 2017 before wrapping up with a truncated 10-episode season in 2018.

In a press release, FX President of Original Programming Eric Schrier discussed the show’s incredible legacy:

“Through its first four seasons, critics have lauded The Americans as one of the best shows on television and, remarkably, a series that keeps getting better every year. All credit for that achievement goes to everyone who has worked on the show, and especially Co-Showrunners Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields, Graham Yost, our brilliant stars Keri Russell, Matthew Rhys, Noah Emmerich, Allison Wright, Holly Taylor, Annet Mahendru and the ensemble cast for their incomparable performances every season.

We have no doubt that this two-season order will allow Joe and Joel to tell this story to its perfect conclusion. On behalf of our producing partners at Fox 21 Television Studios and Amblin TV, we look forward to a brilliant final act of the Jennings family saga.”

The Americans is not only one of the best offerings from FX, it’s one of the best shows on television, period. If you’re not watching it, then I highly recommend that you start catching up, because if Weisberg and Fields can maintain this level of quality until the very end, The Americans will take its rightful place next to some of the all-time TV greats like Breaking Bad and The Sopranos.
