When producer Kathleen Kennedy took over at Lucasfilm, fans wondered what creator George Lucas’ involvement was going to be in the new Star Wars movies. After all, this third trilogy is something he’s had in mind for decades. Many were pleased to hear that Lucas would apparently still be retiring, opting to make little experimental films in his garage instead of tinkering in a galaxy far, far away. Oh, he’d be available as a consultant, but that’s about as far as things would go. Or so we thought…
In a new interview with Flicks and the City (via FilmDrunk), George’s son Jett revealed that he knows what happens in the upcoming trilogy and says his dad is a bit more involved than a lot of fans may have hoped:
He’s constantly talking to J.J. Obviously J.J. was handpicked. [George Lucas] is there to guide, whenever, he’ll help where he can. At the same time, he wants to let it go and become its new generation.
So which is it, George? Constantly whispering in J.J.’s ear has to make it increasingly difficult for the new director to put his own spin on things – despite the prequels, Lucas is probably close to a deity in Abrams’ eyes, so it’d probably be tough to straight-up ignore his advice – but Lucas also apparently wants to let the new movies thrive for a new generation. I guess we’ll have to wait until Episode VII’s press tour or for some behind the scenes featurettes on the eventual Blu-ray before we find out just how much Lucas actually guided the story. On a separate note, many of you know there have long been rumors of a live-action Star Wars TV show, and whispers about the series’ state of development (or lack thereof) have increased dramatically in the last few years. Once Disney purchased Lucasfilm, though, those talks all but died, since the Mouse House is obviously looking to capitalize on their newly acquired brand with a new movie every year starting in 2015.
But back when things were a little more up in the air, filmmaker Paul J. Alessi put together a concept reel (via Bleeding Cool) for what a live action show could look like. There’s a lightsaber battle and a nice little tease at the end which would tie in to the larger universe, hinting at some of the interesting directions this series could have gone if it were ever produced.
