‘Gran Turismo’ Live-Action Film Finds A Writer

By November 22, 2013

Back in July, we told you how the Playstation-exclusive racing game Gran Turismo went into development as a film at Sony and is the latest in a long line of video game-to-live action adaptations.

Thanks to an exclusive from the Hollywood Reporter, we now know that in addition to the film being produced by Dana Brunetti and actor Kevin Spacey from Trigger Street Productions (The Social Network, 50 Shades of Grey) and Mike De Luca, screenwriter Alex Tse (Watchmen, Highlander remake) will write the script that will revolve around a competition where gamers build and race their own cars – based on the real-life “GT Academy” and the video game itself.

When the gang at Collider pumped Brunetti two days ago for more knowledge about the plot (including how the hell he’s gonna make a film out of a game that has no storyline), Brunetti happily explained that:

“A lot of people are like, ‘How the hell do you make a movie out of a video game that’s basically a driving simulator?’ And actually the story is they did an online competition where they narrowed it down 25,000 people competing online, and then got it narrowed down to 22 people that they took to Silverstone race track basically to see if it was possible to go from virtual to reality.  And then they basically put them through a racing boot camp through physical, mental, and technical driving school to train and see who would be the best race car drivers out of that.

The top two they then took and put in the 24 hours at Dubai race, and they are now race car drivers… So the movie that we’re gonna do is kind of really a wish-fulfillment fantasy that this kid plays this video game and ultimately goes from this video game to actually racing the race cars.”

As usual, when I know more, YOU’LL know!
