‘Guardians of the Galaxy 2’ Will Feature Tyler Bates Returning as Composer

By August 20, 2015

Out of all of the things that stood out from Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, one of the biggest was the music. Both the tunes featured on Star Lord’s (Chris Pratt) Awesome Mix Vol. 1, and the original score composed by Tyler Bates (Killer Joe, Slither) helped to give Guardians one of the most unique soundtracks of any Marvel or superhero movie ever.

However, Marvel has a reputation for switching out their composers between sequels. Almost every Marvel sequel, has a different composer than the original film had because it saves the studio money. No sequels mean no pay raises, and its not necessarily a bad thing, as much as it just usually gives a different tone and feeling to the studio compared to the original. Although, some times its blaringly apparent the original composer is missing… looking at you Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World.

It looks like they might be breaking their pattern though. It has officially been confirmed today that Tyler Bates will, in fact, be returning to do the score and composing for Guardians of the Galaxy 2 or Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2. The composer has usually operated in the TV world for most of his career, with some of his credits including Salem and Low Winter Sun, although he did work with James Gunn prior to GOTG on one of the director’s earlier films, Slither.

It may seem like small news, but this should excite all die hard fans out there because this means that Marvel is aware of how all of the little details helped to make Guardians so great in the first place. Gunn, meanwhile, has already confirmed he will be comprising the songs on Awesome Mix Vol. 2, personally himself, so we can look forward to that in two years or so. With that confirmation and now this news too, it looks like Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is moving along at a steady enough pace for now.

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is set to hit theatres on May 5th, 2017.
