Hans Zimmer Will Return to Score ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’

By November 3, 2014

Composer Hans Zimmer will return to the DC Universe to score Zack Snyder’s upcoming cinematic universe kick off film Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. According to a new interview with Comic Book Resources’ Spinoff Online, Zimmer has revealed that he’ll be heading to Detroit to work with Snyder on the film’s score. He also detailed what his thought processes are in both returning to the style he established in last year’s Man of Steel, as well as his thoughts in returning to Batman for the first time since 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises.

You know something? I have agonized over it. I agonized over it, so much so that finally, I went, I don’t want to betray what Chris, James Newton Howard and I did. And so I asked Zack [Snyder] if it would be OK if I called a friend in. And I’m going to be working with Junkie XL, who really is a great friend. He just finished the Mad Max score. I said to him, “You take care of Batman. I’ll do the other guy.” And Zack loved that idea. It’s a way out.

Junkie XL has actually collaborated before with Zimmer, when he stepped in on a few tracks for the soundtrack to The Dark Knight Rises and collaborated with him on Man of Steel. The idea of two competing musical styles in a film featuring Batman has also been tried before with James Newton Howard on both Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, as Zimmer alluded to in his statement above.

This puts to rest the speculation about Zimmer’s return for this film, which has been thought to happen, but hasn’t been solidly confirmed before today. The score for Man of Steel was certainly one of that film’s best elements, and it should prove really interesting to see what Zimmer and Junkie come up with as we head into a new era for DC Comics characters on film.
