‘Hardcore’ Trailer Offers Look at an Entirely New Kind of Movie

By September 14, 2015

The more advanced technology gets, the more and more audiences are getting to see filmmakers test out new formats or techniques when it comes to their movies. Whether it be like James Cameron’s unique visual style and effects in Avatar or even Peter Jackson’s somewhat failed attempt at bringing 48fps to the cinemas with the first Hobbit movie. It most likely won’t be before long until filmmakers are creating movies solely made for the Oculus Rift or VR, and it’ll be interesting to see how this trend continues to affect and change the industry moving forwards.

One of the movies set to come out sometime soon that looks to not only be challenging the format of movies, but also traditional cinematic storytelling is Hardcore. The movie is a new sci-fi/action flick that is shot entirely from a POV perspective of its main character, like a first-person action shooter video game. Only this time, the video game is in live-action and the stunts happening onscreen are being performed by actual people.

A new trailer for Hardcore has officially premiered online this weekend ahead of its TIFF premiere and gives an even more in-depth look at the movie’s story and action. Check it out below:

Here’s the movie’s official synopsis:

“You remember nothing. Mainly because you’ve just been brought back from the dead by your wife (Haley Bennett). She tells you that your name is Henry and congratulations, you’re now a cyborg. 5 minutes later, your wife has been kidnapped and you should probably go get her back. Who’s got her? His name’s Akan (Danila Kozlovsky), he’s just a psychotic megalomaniac with telekinetic powers, and a never-ending army of mercenaries. You’re also in an unfamiliar city of Moscow, Russia and everyone wants you dead. Everyone, except for a mysterious British fellow called Jimmy (Sharlto Copley). He might be on your side. Good luck Henry. You’re very much likely to need it.”

For a movie where the main character is practically unknown, the film has assembled a fairly interesting supporting cast alongside Henry including Sharlto Copley (District 9), who seems to be picking more and more unique roles the further into his career he gets. Writer and director Ilya Naishuller looks to have completed one of the most ambitious projects of the past few years, and I just hope that the movie ends up being as enthralling and fun as the trailer promises.

What will be interesting is seeing just how well the story and the action end up blending together too. While everyone will go to see the movie for the video game style and unique experience, the movie rides a dangerous line of eventually just turning into mindless – albeit awesome – action if you can’t care about the characters in the film. Right now, Hardcore shows more promise than maybe any other action movie set to come out over the next few years, but we’ll just have to wait and see if it ends up being more than just a cool concept.

Hardcore does not currently have a release date.
