Heathers: The Musical Headed Off-Broadway

By December 11, 2013

Lunchtime poll: A musical based on the ultimate mean girl film is heading off-Broadway…would you go or be a total pillowcase?

That’s right, darlings, after spending time in Los Angeles working out the kinks, the musical based on the 1988 cult classic is headed to New York for a stint off-Broadway at the New World Stages beginning next year.

If you’ve never seen Heathers (SHAME!!), I will break it down for you right quick:

The Heathers are the most powerful group of girls at Westerberg High with Heather Chandler (aka “Heather #1”) the most feared of all who ALWAYS wears the color red (with no other member allowed to wear said color) while Heathers McNamara and Duke (#2 and #3) are her constant sycophants, doing things they really don’t want to do in order to please their leader and keep their status.

The fourth is NOT a “Heather”, she’s a Veronica – Veronica Sawyer, to be exact. Veronica tires of Heather #1’s highly mean girl antics (like getting Veronica to forge a “hot and heavy” love note to the school’s fat girl from the star quarterback) and stupid lunchtime polls…and so far, the only one who knows of her ire is her diary.

That is, until Jesse Dean a.k.a. “JD” rides into town and joins the student body.

After a huge fight with Heather #1 (because she refused to hook up with some random college guy at a frat party) Veronica begins a hot and heavy relationship with JD which leads to the accidental murder of Heather #1. JD comes up with a plan to make her death look like a suicide so that Veronica won’t have to “send her SAT scores to San Quentin instead of Stanford.”

Miraculously it works, but unfortunately JD wants to do more…

…and that’s all I’m gonna say about that.

With the team of Tony Award nominee Laurence O’Keefe (music/lyrics – “Legally Blonde: The Musical”), Emmy award winner Kevin Murphy (lyrics -“Reefer Madness! The Musical”) and director Andy Fickman (“Reefer Madness! The Musical”, “Jewtopia”), this promises to be full of camp and fun!

I wonder how they’ll handle the croquet and explosions?

Here’s hoping Martha (Dumptruck) Dunstock gets her own song…

It’ll be very.

“Heathers: The Musical” hits New York in March 2014.
