Henry Cavill and Zack Snyder Talk About The Possibility of Another Standalone ‘Superman’ Movie

By April 5, 2016

Despite my disappointment in Batman v Superman, I still remain a massive fan of 2013’s Man of Steel, which I thought rebooted the Superman character and world in a unique and mostly, satisfying way. That’s not to say that it doesn’t have flaws, but when Dawn of Justice ended up being less of a Man of Steel sequel than I think anyone actually hoped it would be, I was let down, to say the least.

After rumors last year started going around that Mad Max: Fury Road director, George Miller, was being courted to direct a Man of Steel sequel though, it seemed like hope for a direct follow-up film might not have been so dim after all. Of course, those rumors were quickly proven false, but during a recent conversation with IGN, both Zack Snyder and Henry Cavill revealed what’s stopping the film from happening right now, and what it would take for the sequel to come into fruition.

Snyder stated:

“I think if we could get a good script it would be great to have a standalone Superman movie. I think that would be fun to do,” Snyder said. “Part of the reason we haven’t announced the standalone Superman movie was to support some of the events of (Batman v Superman).”

Cavill shared his eagerness to make the film as well, but echoed the same sentiment as Snyder:

“I do believe it depends upon the success of this movie. If this goes well then we can start to negotiate with Warner Bros. to develop a standalone Superman, but they’ve got their plan set out for other stuff and Justice Leagues and various other movies. It’s about finding the time really. It’s something I would be very keen to do.”

Honestly, more than anything else, I feel like Cavill’s Superman desperately needs his own sequel at this point. Batman v Superman did nothing good for his character, and right now, it seems like DC is at a crossroads with how they’re going to handle the Man of Steel onscreen moving forward. If they’ll keep him going down this dark, almost apathetic path, or if they’ll try and bring him back to the boy scout path that the character should be on.
