Here’s A Rundown of The Best Super Bowl 2014 Movie & TV Trailers & Commercials

By February 3, 2014

I’m going to preface this right now by saying, I am not a fan of the sportsball. You know what happened yesterday? Well, I went and saw Frozen and it was amazeballs! Oh, also The Puppy Bowl was all sorts of cute. Okay okay, it was Super Bowl 48 and The Seattle Seahawks won! Do you know who else won? Advertisers, that’s who!

Every year, advertisers spend big money to vie for a coveted spot during the biggest sports game of the year. This is when the best of the best airs their stuff, and below I’ve compiled a list of the best movie and TV trailers (as well as a few other gems) that hit all of our small screens. Behold!

Transformers: Age Of Extinction

The new trailer for Transformers: Age Of Extinction pretty much owned The Super Bowl. Sure, it’s barely over 30 seconds in length but we’ve finally got Dinobots, people!

Be excited. The new installment to The Transformers franchise is set to hit theaters 6/27/14.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Marvel invested a bit in yesterday’s big game. Here’s the big game spot for Captain America: The Winter Soldier!

And if that teaser for the trailer didn’t whet your whistle, here’s the actual trailer. When did they start teasing trailers anyhow?

Captain America: The Winter Soldier hits theaters on April 4th. That Steve Rogers sure is dreamy…

The Amazing Spider Man 2

As I said above, Marvel bought some ad space for the big game. Below are three different trailers for The Amazing Spider Man 2. I’d say something snarky, but this film looks really damn cool.

If the above two teasers didn’t get you, try this exclusive sizzle reel that was released as sort of an added bonus.

The Amazing Spider Man 2 is coming to theaters in May of 2014!

Coming March 28th is Darren Aronofsky’s new film Noah. This one tells the biblical story of Noah and his arc, and the film stars Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly, Anthony Hopkins, and Emma Watson.

While I’m still on the fence regarding this one, I have never truly been let down by Aronofsky and the trailer does look pretty epic. Noah is coming to theaters March 8th, 2014.

Need For Speed

Jesse Pinkman lives! Oh come on, you know I’m not the only one thinking it! Based on the popular video game franchise, Need For Speed looks like it will be a lot more than just a video game movie. The film’s director, Scott Waugh, has stated he wanted this to be more of an homage to ’60s and ’70s car films. He advised Aaron Paul to study up on Steve McQueen (not the director!). Awesome.

If the little teaser above wasn’t enough, check out the extended clip below.

I’m rather excited for this one! Need For Speed is coming to theaters on March 14th.

Muppets Most Wanted

New Muppets movie! New Muppets movie! It’s been a few years since The Muppets made their triumphant return to the big screen. The new trailer for Muppets Most Wanted continues the schtick it started during The Golden Globes and now has taken to making fun of online Twitter exchanges and movie reviews. Just watch the video and you’ll understand what I mean. Oh, and watch out for pop ups!

And if that wasn’t enough Muppets for you (because who can ever have enough Muppets?) here’s the new Toyota ad starring Terry Crews and featuring Dr Teeth and the Electric Mayhem!

Muppets Most Wanted is set to open theatrically on March 21st, 2014!

Kia K900 “The Truth”

Aside from the big movie trailers that premiered during The Super Bowl, we also had the privilege of seeing some rather entertaining and creative commercials. For instance, the new spot for the Kia K900 entitled “The Truth” shows Laurence Fishburne reprising his role as Morpheus from The Matrix films.

I really liked this one.

The Phone Call: #InWithTheNew – RadioShack

Have you stepped inside of a RadioShack recently? Neither have I. Actually, I’m pretty sure I haven’t shopped at one since the ’80s. Well, this commercial not only shows that RadioShack is getting a much needed upgrade, but it also shows a great sense of humor by packing damn near everyone from that decade into a minute long spot. There’s Hulk Hogan, Alf, Eric Estrada, Cliff Clavin, Dee Snider, Jason Vorhees…

…Sgt. Slaughter, Mary Lou Retton, Kid & Play, The California Raisins, Teen Wolf, Chucky…hmm…is that everyone? You tell me!

Wonderful Pistachios with Stephen Colbert

I love pistachios. I love Stephen Colbert. End of story.

Time Warner Cable – “Grandma’s House”

Vampire Bill, Sookie Stackhouse and P. Diddy walk into a house…

This Time Warner Cable spot is interesting just for the sheer amount of television personalities they got in one place at one time. Also, is it too early to request Drake as a guest star on “True Blood”? Started from the bottom now…you’re a vampire…? I got nothing.

“Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee”

For weeks now, the rumor mill has been buzzing regarding this super secret project Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David had been working on. First, David lets it slip at a party that they have been working on a Broadway play. Then Jerry says a “Seinfeld” reunion is coming very soon. That season of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” was pretty great but a flat our reunion?! Awesome!

Well, not really. Because this reunion in question was really a new episode of Seinfeld’s popular online series “Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee.” The episode being teased in the trailer above is called “George Costanza: The Over-Cheer” and it shows Jerry Seinfeld, Jason Alexander, and Wayne Knight all reprising their roles from the series. The full episode is 6 minutes of what looks like a bite-sized “Seinfeld” episode.

Oh who am I kidding, I’m totally going to watch it.

“24: Live Another Day”

It’s almost 4 years since “24” went off the air. There have been on- and off-again talks of a movie that has yet to happen. But what is happening is this right here! Coming this summer is the new event series “24: Live Another Day”! Jack’s back! Chloe’s back! The 12 episode series will take place in London and…oh come on, all that matters is the return of what I like to call THE JACK BAUER POWER HOUR! (trademark?)

It was a great day for commercials (and football?). While I’ve listed a chunk of our favorites, there are many more that aired which aren’t covered here. This is where you come in, dear readers! Tell me your favorite commercials from yesterday’s big game in the comments below!

Completely disappointed in the commercials this year. Yes, of course, the Budweiser was cute and you always expect those to be exactly what they are, but where was the funny ones? I thought the trailers blew commercals away.

    • You know, to research for this piece, I recorded the Super Bowl on the DVR and then fast forwarded through it to catch all the commercials and I thought the same thing. Seems that movie trailers took over the ad space this year. I wonder why that is.

I agree. Some were cute and sweet – Someone was definitely cutting onions for their returning solder, but definitely no funny AT ALL!

Optimus Prime riding Grimlock into battle made my entire night. 🙂

    • I like the cut of your jib

    • Even though Revenge of the Fallen was pretty terrible, I couldn’t help but get psyched seeing Prime ride on Grimlock’s back like that. Bay knows how to pull us back in…
