‘I Saw the Light’ Clip Shows First Look at Tom Hiddleston in New Biopic

By September 11, 2015

Tom Hiddleston is probably most well-known for his performance as the villain Loki in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films. The relatively unknown actor seemed to come out of nowhere in the first Thor back in 2011, and was able to add a level of Shakespearean depth and tragedy to his performance as Loki that none of the other Marvel movie villains had had up to that point, or possibly since for that matter.

However, his performances have remained intriguing and strong both in and out of the MCU, with his roles in movies like Midnight in Paris, Only Lovers Left Alive, War Horse, and more have all managed to bring even more credence to the idea that Hiddleston might just be one of the most versatile actors in the industry right now.

With two more films set to be released later this year, one being Guillermo del Toro’s gothic horror, Crimson Peak, and the other being the Hank Williams biopic, I Saw the Light, Hiddleston might just be entering into some more serious awards conversations later this year, especially with the latter project. Earlier today too, a few months ahead of its theatrical release, Hiddleston has revealed the first clip from I Saw the Light online – giving fans their first full look at him as the iconic country singer. Check it out below:

Here’s the film’s official synopsis:

“I SAW THE LIGHT, the story of the legendary country western singer Hank Williams, who in his brief life created one of the greatest bodies of work in American music. The film chronicles his meteoric rise to fame and its ultimately tragic effect on his health and personal life.”

Hiddleston looks like he’s eating up the role as Williams, and the movie’s look and tone immediately bring another musical biopic to mind with 2005’s I Walk the Line, about Johnny Cash starring Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon. Whether or not the movie will be as high quality as the Cash biopic will have to wait to be seen, but considering the incredibly talented cast that I Saw the Light boasts, it’ll be interesting to see if the movie ends up being one of the hits or misses of this year’s Oscar season.

I Saw the Light is set to hit theatres on November 27th.
