J. Jonah Jameson May Appear in ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ Franchise

By April 22, 2014

If you’ve kept up with the Andrew Garfield-led The Amazing Spider-Man franchise, you’ve probably noticed what I feel is an important component who has yet to get screen time. That component is one man with one hell of an alliterated name: the tough as nails Editor-in-Chief for the Daily Bugle (and eventual Mayor of New York City),  J. Jonah Jameson.

So what’s up with that?

Well, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 director Marc Webb has somewhat of an answer for you. During the first live Google+ Shoppable Hangout in promotion for TASM2, Webb said, “I like the idea very much of him coming up in one of the next films. It’s an idea we kind of talked about, ‘cause I love that character and he poses a very interesting dilemma for Spider-Man.”

But of course finding a guy as epic as J.K. Simmons (above) from the first Spider-Man franchise to play the role is the catch. “It was easier to accept the new Spider-Man than somebody who can outdo J.K. Simmons in that role,” said Webb.

So will he or won’t he appear in the franchise? Webb said that fans “could expect to see [Jameson] in the future,” and considering Jameson’s editorial rant on The Daily Bugle (aka “Tumblr”) about Spidey’s massive damage to NYC the LAST time around, odds are he may just show up soon enough. “Did anyone consider that during Spider-Man’s prolonged pursuit and apprehension of Schultz, a city bus, a police car, two streetlights, a fire hydrant and 20 feet of sidewalk were destroyed? And who’s paying for Spider-Man’s actions? I am. You are. And every other taxpayer in this city.” Harsh words, JJJ.

As far as I’m concerned, he’d better show up quickly, seeing as he’s just as important a staple as Peter Parker’s beloved Aunt May, who coincidentally is now related to the Parkers as Jameson’s father, JJJ Sr. (which makes Jonah “JJJ Jr.) married Aunt May. That in and of itself could make for some movie magic.

That being said, something needs to be done because IMHO this latest go-round of Spider-Man is my LEAST favorite of the Marvel film franchise.

And because I’m feeling generous, here’s the Google+ Shoppable Hangout interview in its entirety.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens May 2, 2014.

I REALLY want to know your thoughts on this one. Who do YOU think should play J. Jonah?
