James Gunn Reveals the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ Post-Credits Scene is Already Written

By January 27, 2016

James Gunn has been riding the perfect line over the past few months when it comes to teasing the status of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, without giving too much away, or getting in trouble with the studio execs at Marvel. Now, with the film set to begin filming in just a few short weeks, and the script complete, Gunn has provided some interesting new updates on the project, including how long fans will have to wait for some more casting confirmations, and the status of the film’s post-credits scene.

As usual though, Gunn used the social media machine to make these announcements, through his official Twitter account and answering numerous fan questions that likely flooded in after several of Vol. 2‘s cast members posted about a table read for the film.

The first was sharing his excitement for the project after said table read, and the talented returning and new cast members:

That led many to wondering, as you can probably imagine, when exactly the entire cast for the film would be announced, especially since numerous reports have pinned Kurt Russell as the frontrunner to play Peter Quill/Star Lord’s mysterious father in the film. According to Gunn, we can expect that announcement to come very soon:

As for the post-credits scene in the film, which could either be a teaser for what’s to come after Vol. 2 in the MCU, or a completely nonsensical piece of footage (see the end of Guardians), Gunn confirmed that he has already written the mysterious final tag for the film:

Now, normally we’re not hearing about post-credits scenes in the Marvel movies until well… when we’re sitting through the credits, and considering the completely unimportant credits tag featured at the end of Guardians in 2014, this wouldn’t really be all that much to fuss about. But what I really like about this news, and the past few months of Gunn’s attitude honestly, is how confident he has seemed to be when it comes to the sequel’s story and tone.

The news that he’s already scripted the post credits scene for the film means that he already either knows what he needs/wants to tease in the follow-up Marvel films, or he’s confident in how he wants to say goodbye to the Guardians world for a few years, since they won’t likely return to the big screen until Infinity War Part 1 or Part 2. That alone is enough to get me excited for this sequel, and other than that, I’m just gonna sit here waiting for Kurt Russell to get confirmed for the film because in case anyone over at Marvel is listening: that would be amazing.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is set to hit theatres on May 5th, 2017.
