James Gunn Talks ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 2,’ Chris Pratt/Indiana Jones Rumors

By April 3, 2015

Although you can likely credit 2011’s Thor with really opening up the boundaries of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, last year’s Guardians of the Galaxy, directed by James Gunn, took things to a whole other level. By being the first widely successful cosmic comics-based film, Guardians had the virtue of sort of being a superhero movie, but having a bit more in common with space opera than with masked vigilante. Naturally, another film will be coming due to the original’s immense box office success, and the mastermind behind it — writer-director James Gunn — recently opened up ever so briefly about it.

Talking with fans on Periscope, a new social media app (via Variety), Gunn didn’t get into too many specifics when discussing the sequel to 2014’s runaway hit, but he did give an idea of its tone. He said that the script is nearing completion, and that Karen Gillan’s character — the villainous Nebula, “sister” of Gamora — would be back in the sequel. He didn’t really specify how the tone in Guardians 2 would be different from its predecessor, only that it would be. On top of that, he also answered some questions about the first film, saying that it wasn’t difficult to tone down the level of violence, while also confirming a question that asked if Gunn’s dog’s teeth served as the basis for Rocket’s in the film. They did.

Beyond that, it was a pretty casual conversation that Gunn was able to have with fans. He talked about other film series he enjoyed, like James Bond, his personal Marvel Comics collection, among other things.

Interestingly enough, he also addressed the recent rumors floating around that purport Chris Pratt — Guardians of the Galaxy‘s Star-Lord — to be the next cinematic Indiana Jones in some kind of Disney-based reboot. Gunn seemed to like the idea, but said that it sounded like “bulls**t” that was stirred up by the internet.

All in all, it sounds like Gunn is hard at work developing the story for what will become Guardians of the Galaxy 2, even though he’s also helping to develops his new independent film The Belco ExperimentGuardians of the Galaxy 2 is scheduled to be released in theaters on May 5th, 2017. You can catch the next part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe when Avengers: Age of Ultron opens next month.

would be cool to see a reboot of Indiana Jones! I don’t think anything better than the temple of Doom will ever be made again though
