‘Jessica Jones’ Director Takes On ‘The Defenders’

By October 29, 2016

After learning last week that Season 2 of Jessica Jones would feature an all-female roster of directors, Marvel is continuing to add some diversity behind the camera, announcing that acclaimed television director S.J. Clarkson would helm the first two episodes of The Defenders.

Clarkson, who also directed the first two episodes of Jessica Jones along with episodes of HBO’s Vinyl, Showtime’s Dexter and Netflix’s Orange is the New Black, will not only be given an opportunity to set the tone for the limited series, but she’ll also serve as executive producer on the Defenders premiere.

In a brief statement, Marvel Television head Jeph Loeb spoke about the decision to bring Clarkson back to the family:

“S.J.’s take on the material is outstanding. We loved her work on Marvel’s Jessica Jones and couldn’t think of a more talented and accomplished person to helm the first two episodes of Marvel’s The Defenders.”

The culmination of Marvel’s long-term deal to produce original content for Netflix, The Defenders will bring together Daredevil (Charlie Cox), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter) and Iron Fist (Finn Jones) as they join forces to combat a threat that none of them can defeat on their own. No word yet on which character will menace the heroes, but we know Sigourney Weaver already has been tapped to portray a villain in the series.

Marco Ramirez and Doug Petrie will serve as showrunners for The Defenders, whose eight-episode order should hopefully alleviate some of the pacing issues that have plagued each of Marvel’s Netflix-based offerings. Other Marvel series on Netflix have had season runs of 13 episodes like Luke Cage, Daredevil and even Jessica Jones.

If cutting a full third of that weight pays dividends on The Defenders, fans might see the other shows adopt a similar practice in future seasons.

The Defenders doesn’t have an official release date yet, but is expected to hit Netflix sometime in 2018.
