A few months ago, Disney announced the start of production on Star Wars: Episode VIII with a brief seconds of familiar footage from the film, and our first real look at director Rian Johnson on set of the film. In addition to the video though, the studio also confirmed that Laura Dern, Benicio del Toro, and Kelly Marie Tran would be joining the cast of the film as well, and while del Toro and Dern were both respected names in the industry, Tran was a mystery.
Only really known for her work on several YouTube videos and her work with CollegeHumor, much like Daisy Ridley’s casting in Episode VII, no one really knew what to make of the Tran’s casting in the film, or what role she would play in its story.
While appearing last night at the UK Gala Screening of Secrets of the Force Awakens documentary though (via WhatCulture), John Boyega apparently, briefly teased his work on Episode VIII, by mostly talking about how solid the script is and Rian Johnson, but Boyega also might have slipped up and revealed that Tran is actually the new lead of the film. Per WhatCulture:
“When talking about new things to be excited, he said Kelly Marie Tran is Episode VIII’s “new lead.”
Now, it had been rumored that Johnson was taking some time before production to rework the Episode VIII script so that it focused more on the characters introduced in Episode VII, but if Boyega is going far out enough to call Tran a “new lead”, then her role must not have been cut down enough to take that away, and if she’s possibly interacting with Boyega’s Finn as well, is it possible that she may be a notable new addition to the Resistance side of the war?
This plays into an exclusive we ran at GeekNation last year as well, that the film would be introducing a strong new female lead created by Johnson, and while at the time we were hearing the character was Han Solo’s daughter, it’s possible things have changed since. As of right now, nothing is for sure about what Tran’s role in the film will be, but until then, let’s all just take a moment to be happy about the inclusion of even more strong, important female characters into the Star Wars canon, shall we?
For those of you completely unfamiliar with Tran’s previous work as well, you can check out one of her CollegeHumor sketches below:
Star Wars: Episode VIII will hit theatres on December 15th, 2017.
