UPDATED 12/23: According to IGN, Star Trek 3 will be released on July 8th, 2016. This release successfully coincides with the 50th anniversary of the franchise.
The final script will be written by Patrick McKay and John D. Payne, from a story by writer-producer Roberto Orci. More on the film as it develops!
Original Story: Bad news for Riker fans but good news for fans hoping to see the sequel to Star Trek Into Darkness sooner rather than later: Deadline has reported that Justin Lin, director of Fast & Furious 6, will be directing the as-yet untitled third new Star Trek film scheduled for release in 2016.
Lin arrives on the project after a minor crisis arose surrounding the departure of screenwriter Roberto Orci from the director’s chair, who was going to be making his directorial debut on the project before he bowed out. Similarly to J.J. Abrams revival of Star Trek, Lin is credited with breathing new life into the once-stagnant Fast & Furious franchise, which will see its seventh installment hit theaters next summer. While there was a brief online social media campaign to give the job to Star Trek: The Next Generation actor, film and TV director Jonathan Frakes, it looks as though those calls failed to materialize.
The choice of Paramount and Bad Robot Productions to go with Lin as the director seems to indicate that the film will have a heavy action focus, an interesting development considering the somewhat mixed fan reaction that franchise devotees had to Star Trek Into Darkness. The end of the last film left the characters at the very beginning of a five-year mission of deep-space exploration, the same mission that the characters were on through the entirety of the original “Star Trek” TV series that ran for three seasons from 1966-1969. That would seem to emphasize that this film will be set to truly explore the unknown, without a substantial amount of time in familiar locales like Earth, Vulcan, or Kronos, where the first two films often found themselves.
Star Trek 3 will be writen by Roberto Orci, produced by J.J. Abrams and Bad Robot Productions, and directed by Justin Lin. It’s expected to star Chris Pine as Captain James T. Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Commander Spock, Karl Urban as Doctor McCoy, Zoe Saldana as Lieutenant Uhura, Simon Pegg as Lieutenant Commander Montgomery “Scotty” Scott, and Anton Yelchin as Ensign Pavel Chekov.
