Kathy Bates Will Join Billy Bob Thornton in ‘Bad Santa 2’

By November 19, 2015

Bad Santa 2 is coming to theatres, finally, and no one is more excited than this guy. Yeah. Me. I love the original and just watched it on Netflix – yeah, it’s on Netflix. Go watch it. Now. I’ll wait.

Right? It’s damn funny, has a lot of heart – strangely enough; and is a great precursor of a movie you can enjoy before diving in to the classics.

Now, thanks to a report from The Hollwyood Reporter, Kathy Bates is joining the cast and will play, get this, Billy Bob Thorton’s mother. I mean, perfect.

Plot details for the new movie are being kept wrapped under the tree but Bates will play Sunny Soke, the foulmouthed, tough-as-nails mother to Thornton’s mall Santa, Willie Soke.

Also in the movie are Tony Cox and Brett Kelly. Kelly played the kid character in the first movie and reprises the same role, this time as an adult.

Indeed the whole gang seems to be back and as a fan of the original movie, that makes me smile. Moreover, a fantastic team has been assembled behind the scenes that include Entourage creator Doug Ellin and Mean Girls director Mark Waters.

Mark Waters (Mean Girls) is directing the movie which reunites him with his Freaky Friday producer Andrew Gunn. Geyer Kosinski is also producing.

Johnny Rosenthal, Doug Ellin (Entourage) and Shauna Cross (If I Stay) wrote the script. Miramax’s Zanne Devine and David Thwaites, Broad Green’s Gabriel and Daniel Hammond, Waters, Jessica Tuchinsky, and Ellin are exec producing.

The original came and went without much of a glance from me or audiences. But word of mouth gave this movie a second life and has now become, somewhat, of a tradition for me in that I like to watch the movie right before Thanksgiving. What’s truly great about this movie, however, is that it is not necessarily a Christmas movie. It’s actually a raunchy comedy that reveals itself to be a character study at the end of the day. The humor is subtle and well timed. There’s no ‘low hanging fruit’ humor with this one.  I just hope the same happens with the sequel.

No details on release as of yet but since the production is gearing up soon, I’d expect a holiday roll out next year, 2016. Time to mark the calendars now.
