‘Kubo and the Two Strings’ Trailer Promises Laika’s Most Epic Adventure Yet

By March 10, 2016

After impressive animated outings like Coraline, The Boxtrolls, and my personal favorite, ParaNorman, LAIKA Animation Studios is set to return to the silver screen again this year with yet another CGI and stop-motion hybrid film, Kubo and the Two Strings, directed by the head of LAIKA, Travis Knight.

Told like an old samurai story, the film follows Kubo, who ventures on an epic, swashbuckling journey across ancient Japan to find the suit of armor once worn by his late father, the greatest samurai that the world has ever known, before a reawakened spirit with an age old vendetta tears his world apart.

A new, gorgeous trailer for the film was released online today as well, and it looks just as stellar as the previous two. Check it out below:

Just like all of LAIKA’s previous films, the movie looks like the very definition of charming. Combining elements from all kinds of age old stories with their modern, quirky humor, and it’s no wonder Kubo and the Two Strings was able to wrangle a cast that includes Matthew McConaughey, Rooney Mara, Charlize Theron, Ralph Fiennes, and more.

It’ll be interesting to see how this ends up fitting in amongst LAIKA’s entire filmography, but Kubo at least looks like their most ambitious film yet, both visually, and in terms of the story’s scope as well. If any studio was going to pull off a movie with a story as crazy and zany as this though, it would be them.

Kubo and the Two Strings will hit theatres on August 19th.
