Luc Besson has been making action movies for a long time, and while he’s worked on his fair share of testosterone-driven films (The Transporter series comes to mind), he also has a history of creating memorable female characters (The Professional, La Femme Nikita). His newest project, Lucy, stars Scarlett Johansson and though it has many of the elements you’d expect from a Besson action thriller, there are also a ton of other ideas thrown in the mix as well. The other thing that needs to be said about Besson is that his filmography is extremely hit or miss. Lately, he’s been chalking up a bunch in the “miss” column: 3 Days to Kill, The Family, Colombiana, Taken 2, and From Paris With Love, all in the past four years. But Lucy looks like it might actually be a step in the right direction to bring him out of his recent funk. Take a look below:
The similarities to the Bradley Cooper film Limitless can’t be ignored, since the super-drug basically does the same thing in both films: unlock the potential to access more of one’s brain. But I also caught a hint of the upcoming Johnny Depp film Transcendence in there as ScarJo’s skin starts trailing off, and I couldn’t help but be reminded of Spike Jonze’s Her when – spoilers for Her – she begins to gain higher consciousness (ScarJoe was the voice of Joaquin Phoenix’s operating system, after all), and there’s even a tiny flash of The Matrix in there with the hallway imagery at the end.
Does this mean the film will be any good? Besson has made a career out of cribbing from famous films and smashing ideas together to create his own things, so we’ll have to see how much originality makes its way into this final product. And even if it’s not wholly original, there’s something to be said for a well-executed action film that knows what it wants to be.
What do you think about Lucy?
