Marvel’s Event Series ‘Secret Wars’ Dominates Comics Sales Charts

By June 13, 2015

Diamond Comics Distributors have released their latest sales figures for May of 2015, and it shows that the superhero event series is making a massive comeback.

After the lackluster reception and performance surrounding DC’s Convergence, Marvel’s massive universe reset Secret Wars — written by Jonathan Hickman with art by Esad Ribic — is seeing enormous sales figures. According to Diamond (via Newsarama), Secret Wars #1 sold an astonishing 500,000 copies. Combining the long-running Marvel Comics Universe and the more recent Ultimate universe, Secret Wars is bringing the two together to form a brand new hybrid comics universe in which all of Marvel’s comic book adventures will take place going forward. While some elements in the universe will begin representing the versions found in the current Marvel Cinematic Universe more closely, other characters are seeing an expansion in their casts. or instance, there will now be two Spider-Man characters and two Spider-Woman characters in the same universe.

On the front of best-selling graphic novels, DC Comics took the top spot with the original release Batman: Earth One Volume 2 by writer Geoff Johns and artist Gary Frank. Following up on 2012’s first volume, the Earth One version of Batman has no experience outside of Gotham, and makes some comparatively serious mistakes when compared to his always-prepared counterpart in the mainline DC Universe.

Still, it wasn’t quite enough for DC to gain a foothold in the overall comic book market, as Marvel maintains an over 40% dollar share of the entire thing when compared with DC’s far more modest 26%. This motnh will be interesting to see unfold, though, since Marvel will be knee-deep in Secret Wars and related tie-ins while DC will be beginning many of their post-COnvergence relaunch titles placing characters in a variety of very different and unusual situations.

Marvel owning 40% of the comic book market is insane!! are there any other markets that are dominated by one Company, such as what is happening here with Marvel?
