As far as most fans are concerned, Jon Bernthal gave one of the best performances in comic book history earlier this year as Frank Castle/The Punisher in season 2 of Marvel’s Daredevil, bringing to life an accurate and fitting version of the character onscreen for the first time, who up until this point had been on the receiving end of mostly mediocre to appalling live-action adaptations. Unless, of course, you count that Dirty Laundry short that Thomas Jane was in, which is still bad ass.
Bernthal’s performance as the character is far from being over though, with his version of Frank Castle finally donning the iconic black trenchcoat and white skull in the final episode of Daredevil‘s second season and his own solo series on Netflix already announced.
While no official news or updates on the new series’ progress/premiere date has been made either, a new Reddit post shows a screenshot of the Netflix app page, which displays The Punisher as having a possible 2017 premiere, though make sure to take all of this with a grain of salt for the time being as the screenshot doesn’t reveal which region the user is in and as Screen Rant notes, a quick look at the U.S. Netflix page for the show still does not have a release date.
However, the screenshot does also come with a synopsis for the series, which seems to fall in line with Bernthal’s previous comments that the series will continue to follow and possibly complete Frank Castle’s transformation into The Punisher.
After the murder of his family, Frank Castle is both haunted and hunted. In the criminal underworld, he’ll become known as The Punisher.
With all of this being said though, it seems unlikely that The Punisher will be released in 2017, with both Iron Fist and The Defenders already set for premieres next year as well. If I were a betting man, I’d guess that it’ll premiere sometime in 2018, along with the highly-anticipated second season of Jessica Jones as well, which is also rumored to be released that year.
Hopefully viewers won’t have to wait that long to see Bernthal reprise the role again onscreen, but it seems like everything remains mostly hearsay for the time being. No matter how frustrating that may be for some fans.
The Punisher does not currently have a release date.
