Fans of the Bourne film series have a new reason to celebrate, as E! News has reported that Matt Damon will return as the eponymous Jason Bourne in a new entry for the series, according to the actor himself. At a red carpet event celebrating the fourth season of Damon and Ben Affleck’s passion project known as Project Greenlight, Affleck was the first one who seemed to let slip that Damon would be heading back to the intelligence operative created by author Robert Ludlum. When pressed for clarification, Damon gave up some of the best details.
Yes, next year. It’ll be in 2016 when the movie will actually come out. [Director] Paul Greengrass is going to do another one and that’s all I ever said. I just needed him to say yes.
Both Greengrass’ return to the director’s chair and Damon’s return to the part will be the first time they filled those roles since 2007’s The Bourne Ultimatum, which saw his character go underground after exposing the secret project which turned him into the efficient assassin he’s known for being. 2012’s The Bourne Legacy followed character Aaron Cross, played by Jeremy Renner, as he tried to escape his own assassination from the cancellation of a different project that made him a physically augmented operative.
Also catching a few more words with Affleck and Damon, Access Hollywood asked both men which character would win in a fight: Affleck’s Batman, or Damon’s Bourne? The following exchange was pure joy.
“Well, first of all, Batman is not real and Jason Bourne is,” said Damon. Affleck shot back, “If Batman is fighting Superman, I think he’s a little past Jason Bourne!” Damon then tossed a plug for the upcoming DC Comics film in to end the discussion: “I don’t understand why Batman and Superman are fighting. I guess I’ll have to see the movie.”
Either way, it looks like some interesting things are afoot for both actors, as they get ready to embody — and re-embody — some of the world’s favorite action heroes. What do you think? Are you glad to see Bourne back in the saddle? Who do YOU think would win between Bourne and Batman?
