New Details Emerge For Disney’s ‘Enchanted 2’

By September 29, 2015

Disney’s Enchanted was a hit (Depending upon who you ask, that is! Because when you’re talking Disney these days, $340 million isn’t going to win any sort of prize!) for the House Of Mouse back when it was released in 2007. So, the studio immediately started plans for a sequel to the live-action musical. Fast forward eight years, and there’s still been very little movement on the project. At least until now…

According to a report over at Collider, Disney is once again keen on the project, which now has the working title of Disenchanted.  The studio is currently in the process of beefing up the script in order to get it to a place where the project can be officially green-lit. As of now, Ann Fletcher is still slated to direct the film, although there is no word on whether or not the original cast, which included Amy Adams, Patrick Dempsey, James Marsden and Susan Sarandon, will be returning to reprise their roles. Adams has previously stated that she would be interested in returning to the role, but there are a lot of factors at work, so we’ll have to wait and see what happens.

I enjoyed the first film, although I can’t say that I’m clamouring for a sequel. Adams’ performance was particularly delightful, so it would be a shame if she didn’t reprise her role this time around. The main issue is, does anyone really care about these characters anymore? Eight years (and counting) is a long time between films, although that doesn’t seem to stop the studios (as is evidenced by next year’s Independence Day: Resurgence, that has a 20 year gap between stories) when they’ve got something recognizable in their hands. The other issue is, is the musical really the way to go these days? Disney’s last go in the live-action genre was last year’s Into The Woods, which didn’t really blow away the box office with a $128 million domestic return. I guess we can take solace in the fact that, while this is a sequel, it’s not a rehash or a remake of an already established Disney property. That seems to be the studio’s go to these days, so I’ll take a sequel to an original idea wherever I can get it.
