Are you the owner of a brand new eighth generation video game console? How hard was it to choose between the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, or Wii U? Why did you ultimately make the choice that you did? These are some of the questions that people, particularly people that make video games, are curious about, and one research firm decided to try and find out why certain people made the choices that they did.
Nielsen, the same company that measures ratings for television, recently conducted a study that attempted to find out what the biggest determining factors were for people that have bought into this console generation, and the answers are pretty interesting. One of the elements that they asked their representative sample of Xbox One, PS4, and Wii U owners is which last-gen console they owned before transitioning. Unsurprisingly, the numbers seemed to be consistent between brands, with high percentages of PS3 owners transitioning to the PS4, Xbox 360 owners transitioning to the Xbox One, and Wii owners transitioning to Wii U.
Unsurprisingly, since the original Wii was the dominant sales champion of the last generation with over 100 million units sold, 93% of eighth generation console owners owned a Wii at least in addition to an Xbox 360 or PS3.
When listing the major reasons behind the choices to pick up one of the three current-gen consoles, the results were pretty diverse. People who chose a PS4 over the other two listed “better resolution” and “Blu-ray player” functionality as the primary reasons. Xbox One adopters listed “brand” loyalty as the number one reason, followed by “innovative features,” like TV integration and multi-tasking ability. Wii U adopters listed “fun-factor” as the top reason, with the console being “better for kids” as the second major reason.
As we headed into the holiday season late last year, we wrote about how difficult the decision can be to choose new game hardware, and gave some facts and features to try and help people make a better choice. A few months later, that choice is no easier, and may in fact be harder as we anticipate new games like Batman: Arkham Knight, Halo 5: Guardians, or Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. Do you own a new console? What were the reasons you chose the one that you did?
