Now You See Me, which followed the exploits of a team of Robin Hood-like stage magicians known as the Four Horsemen, was one of 2013’s most surprising success stories, grossing more than $350 million worldwide on a fairly modest budget for a major summer release. There didn’t really seem to be much story left to tell, but that’s never stopped Hollywood from forging ahead with a sequel anyway, and Now You See Me 2 will be appearing later this summer.
Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson and Dave Franco reprise their roles from the original film, with Lizzy Caplan replacing Isla Fisher – although we’re not sure if she’s portraying the same character. Mark Ruffalo, Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine are also back, and this time they’ll be joined by Daniel Radcliffe as a wealthy tech mogul who forces the Horsemen out of retirement to pull off another dangerous heist. You can check out the latest trailer for Now You See Me 2 below.
Despite its ridiculous portrayal of stage magic and illusions, I enjoyed the first film quite a bit, but I wouldn’t count myself among those clamoring for a follow-up. And regrettably, none of the trailers or clips I’ve seen have done anything to change my mind. Everything about Now You See Me 2 screams of a transparent attempt to cash in on the popularity of the previous film, and with every new frame of footage I find myself less excited about revisiting this world and these characters. I’ll just have to keep my fingers crossed that this sequel surprises me as much as its predecessor.
Directed by Jon M. Chu, Now You See Me 2 opens on June 10.
