‘Pacific Rim 2’ Casts ‘Star Wars’ Star John Boyega

By June 6, 2016

Following the inventive and visually gorgeous first film from Guillermo del Toro, the Pacific Rim franchise and world is currently in the midst of getting its long-awaited sequel, this time directed by Steven S. DeKnight. With shooting set to begin on the project later this year as well, it looks like the movie has finally found its lead, in one of the most charismatic and promising up-and-coming actors in the industry today.

Deadline is reporting that Star Wars: The Force Awakens star John Boyega is set to play the leading role in the sequel, as the son of Idris Elba’s character from the original film. Producer Mary Parent commented on Boyega’s casting, with an understandable level of excitement:

“It is undeniable that with all his talent and natural charm, John stands out amongst today’s generation of young leading men.”

Del Toro himself added:

“I am very proud and happy to welcome John into a fantastic sandbox. The Pacific Rim universe will be reinforced with him as a leading man as it continues to be a multicultural, multi-layered world. ‘The World saving the world’ was our goal and I couldn’t think of a better man for the job.”

While current story details are being kept under wraps for the time being, the sequel was at point set to take place several years after the original film, where the monster-fighting mechs known as Jaegers, have become commonplace in society. Whether or not it still follows that basic setting and foundation is unknown, but it looks like Boyega is lining up his post Force Awakens projects well so far.

He can next be seen this year in director James Ponsoldt’s The Circle alongside Tom Hanks and Emma Watson, and similar to his Force Awakens co-star, Daisy Ridley, has emerged as one of the most sought after actors working today thanks to their breakout performances in Force Awakens last year. It is unknown if Idris Elba will return for the sequel for the time being, but even despite fan reservations about the sequel not being directed by del Toro, it looks like Pacific Rim 2 is off to a very solid start so far.

Pacfic Rim 2 does not currently have a release date.
